Economics of Mental Illness in Illinois

 

1.      For each and every admission to a state operated inpatient psychiatric facility the cost of processing the evaluations and medical test for a newly admitted patient is $8,000.00.

 

2.      A day of care in a state operated inpatient psychiatric facility costs over $500.00 per patient.  This is $15,000.00 per month.

 

3.      The budget for the Office of Mental Health (OMH) is $2.9 billion per year.

 

4.      The (OMH) budget for medications is $7.6 million per year.

 

5.      The daily expenditure by OMH for medications is now $31,000.00 per day, or $11,315,000 for a year.

 

6.      The OMH currently has 1,700 inpatients on a daily basis and the daily cost of medications for these persons (including medical and psychiatric medications) is $18.24 per day per patient, or $547.20 per month per patient.

 

7.      A decanoate (long acting formulation) of antipsychotic medication which lasts for a month costs $20.00.

 

8.      The overall recidivism rate for OMH is 14.9%.  For patients on Clozapine, the rate of recidivism is 9%.

 

9.      The daily cost to OMH of providing Clozapine (including medication and lab tests) is $4.25 per patient or $127.50 per month.

 

10.  OMH Pharmacy is currently able to provide medications to all outpatient clinics that receive OMH funding for services.
